On Saturday, we discussed the commandment that we should not abhor the Edomites and Egyptians: the Edomites because they are kin and the Egyptians because they treated our ancestors well before they became slaves. Were these good reasons to overlook their attacks on and mistreatment of the Israelites? Why did our sages decide that the “statute of limitations” is three generations, i.e., not until after three generations can Edomites and Egyptians be allowed to join the Israelites and convert?
